MARCH 19         GHANAIAN TEXTILES - Jan Tregidgo

This talk follows Jan’s visit to the Adinkra printing villages & the Kente cloth region in Ghana.  Jan had a go at both the weaving and printing and tells a fascinating story of her adventures.  She will also bring textiles that she bought in Ghana.

APRIL 16           FABULOUS FESTIVAL COSTUMES - Ruth Smith


The Miao minority people of SW China make the most colourful and spectacular costumes for festivals, weddings & New Year.  The women are skilled dyers, weavers and embroiderers. The costume consists of elaborately decorated jackets, pleated indigo dyed skirts, aprons and sometimes gaiters.  You will be introduced to the people, their landscape and their textile skills.  This is a Powerpoint presentation plus actual examples of embroidery techniques collected from the villages where the work was produced.

MAY 21                   ENCHANTING EMBROIDERY - Vikki Lafford


Vikki’s work is inspired by fairy tales.  She mixes traditional hand stitch and hand painting with innovative techniques of stitch and print to create feminine wedding dresses and accessories.  They are adorned with intricate embroidery, Swarovski
crystals and freshwater pearls.

JUNE 18 PRESERVING THE PAST & CREATING THE FUTURE

Jenny Adin-Christie is a professional embroiderer and tutor who graduated from the Royal School of Needlework with distinction in 1999.  She was thrilled to be part of the team chosen to work on the wedding dress of 2011.

JULY 16         KANTHA: COOL SEWING -  Dorothy Tucker

Kantha is a form of embroidered quilt particular to Bengal. Traditionally these were made from old cloth and embroidered with colourful patterns and designs in running stitch. Dorothy will show us how her research into the design and making of these quilts inspires her current work.

She was the Education Officer at the Embroiderers’ Guild for many years and continues to devise and deliver creative practical textile based projects for adults and children in community groups.
